Frequently Asked Questions

When does this tour operate — is it open all year?

No — this tour is closed from 15 May to 14 October every year due to the Similan Islands National Park's annual seasonal closure. The tour season runs from 15 October through to 14 May. Always verify your travel dates fall within the open season before booking. The Similan Islands Catamaran tour operates on the same seasonal schedule.

Is a passport required and what do I need to do before the tour?

Yes — due to regional government rules, a passport copy for each passenger must be sent by email no later than the day before your tour. This is a mandatory legal requirement and the tour cannot proceed without it. After booking, you will receive instructions on where to send the copies. Failure to provide passport copies in time may result in being unable to join the tour.

What are the prices and age categories?

Adults: ฿2,500. Children (3-11 years): ฿2,000. Infants (1-2 years): free. Children under 1 year old are not permitted. The national park fee is fully included in the tour price. Operated by Daotan Pier Tour.

What is included in the tour price?

Included: speedboat (max 35 passengers), hotel transfer round-trip from free area, light breakfast, Thai lunch set, refreshments on board, mask/snorkel/fins, life jacket, all national park fees, English-speaking guide, injury insurance. Not included: towel, hotel transfer from charged areas (Ao Po, Cape Panwa, Nai Harn, Nai Thon, Rawai — ฿200/person, paid in cash on tour day).

Why are the Similan Islands considered world-class for snorkeling?

The Similan Islands National Park, 85 km northwest of Phuket, is consistently ranked among the world's top 10 diving and snorkeling destinations. The park's protected status preserves healthy coral systems with exceptional water clarity. Common sightings include sea turtles, stingrays, clownfish, squid, and hundreds of tropical fish species. Koh Payu (Island #7) is particularly known for sea turtle and clownfish encounters, while Koh Bangu (Island #9) offers pristine coral gardens.

Which four islands are visited and in what order?

The speedboat visits four islands: (1) Koh Bangu (Island #9) — snorkeling from the boat at 10:20; (2) Koh Similan (Island #8) — Donald Duck Bay: snorkeling, beach time, optional Sail Rock Viewpoint trek (11:00); (3) Koh Payu (Island #7) — snorkeling from the boat; sea turtles and clownfish often seen (13:00); (4) Koh Miang (Island #4) — island walk, snorkeling or swimming (14:00). The catamaran version of this tour visits only 3 islands (no Island #7) but spends more time at each.

Can I visit the Sail Rock Viewpoint?

Yes — at Koh Similan (Island #8) there is an optional trek to the famous Sail Rock Viewpoint, one of the most iconic panoramic viewpoints in Thailand, overlooking the entire Similan archipelago. The trek is relatively short but involves uneven terrain; moderate fitness is recommended. This is an optional activity — guests who prefer to stay on the beach or continue snorkeling are not required to trek.

How does this speedboat tour compare to the Sawanu Catamaran tour?

The speedboat (฿2,500 adult / ฿2,000 child) visits 4 islands including Koh Payu (Island #7), departs at 09:00, and costs ฿700 less than the catamaran. The catamaran (฿3,200 adult / ฿2,600 child) visits 3 islands, offers a VIP hospitality lounge breakfast at the pier, onboard wifi, twin-hull stability (better for seasickness), and a larger vessel (max 65 passengers). Both tours include the national park fee, lunch, and snorkeling equipment. Both require a passport copy to be sent by email before the tour.

Can I join the tour from Khao Lak?

Yes — free pickup from Khao Lak is available. When booking, select any Phuket hotel area and mention in the comment box that your hotel is in Khao Lak. Since the speedboat departs from Thap Lamu Pier in Khao Lak, guests staying in Khao Lak have a shorter and more convenient transfer than Phuket guests.

Are there hotel transfer fees and which areas are free?

Almost all Phuket hotel areas have FREE transfer included — including Patong, Karon, Kata, Chalong, Phuket Town, Bang Tao, Kamala, Laguna, Surin, Koh Siray, and Khao Lak. The only areas with a surcharge are: Ao Po, Cape Panwa, Nai Harn, Nai Thon, and Rawai — ฿200/person round-trip, paid in cash on the tour day. Note: Nai Harn and Rawai are free on most other Phuket tours but charged on this tour due to the longer transfer distance to Khao Lak.

Who is NOT allowed on this tour?

Pregnant women, children under 1 year old, and persons over 70 years old are not allowed on this tour. Infants aged 1-2 years travel free; children 3-11 years pay ฿2,000. The early pickup (05:30-07:30) and long day (returning 18:00-19:00) should be considered when booking with very young children.
